SBL: Kids Cook Dinner

I think it's so important to teach children to cook. There is so much confidence to be gained in the kitchen and it prepares them for life. We decided that the kids would cook dinner one night a week during the Summer. They will learn basic cooking skills and build up their recipe book for when they leave the nest someday. I have a secret dream of having teenagers that can cook anything...I call them while I'm out running errands and ask them to get dinner ready - and instead of coming home to Hot Dogs or Mac-n-Cheese, I walk in to find Manicotti or Beef Wellington on the table. Okay...maybe Beef Wellington is stretching it...but you get the picture.

For Karah's first night of cooking dinner, she chose to learn to roast a chicken in the crock pot.  She was so cute. She was a bit concerned over the bag of organs stuffed inside the bird....aren't we all, though?

Bryce was quite curious about the process.

I taught her that the thing that is MOST important (next to thoroughly rinsing the chicken) is talking to the bird. Every bird deserves a name...as well as words of appreciation for the sacrifice it made for our tummies. Some birds appreciate being sung to. This one, "Franklin", was not a music fan.

She practiced some knife skills...

She got him all nestled in for his roast and was off to set the table and prepare the rest of dinner. For sides, she chose to make rice and steam some carrots.

Sadly...the pictures end here. We were so hungry and in such a rush...the final product was never documented...but let me say this....it was Sooooo good!

So proud of Karah. She is quite the cook, already :)
